The Basics: Remote Desktop Manager User Interface Settings

Did you know that we actually eat with our eyes, and not just our mouths? It’s true! Scientific research has found that (excuse me while I put my lab coat on) visual stimuli change our perception of taste, smell, and flavor. In other words, the more attractive and appealing food looks, the more we enjoy it. That’s a big reason why food in restaurants seems to taste so much better than the stuff we make at home.

Why do I bring this up? Because we’ve done our best to make Remote Desktop Manager’s user interface as streamlined, intuitive, simple, and elegant as possible, so that you have the best experience possible. Think of it like food for your brain instead of your stomach.

Here are the basics of changing RDM’s user interface settings:

Style

RDM supports different user interface styles. To experiment and select the one that you like best, go to File – Options – User Interface and click on the Ribbon interface’s dropdown menu.

From there, you can choose between:
  • Ribbon: This is the default style when you first launch RDM. The icons and text makes it easy to explore features.
  • Menu: This is the previous generation style, and it provides a standard menu for various commands.

What if you don’t like where certain areas/menus are located in either style? No problem! You can customize the user interface by left clicking, dragging, and docking.

Theme

You can also change the user interface theme to suit your preference. The default is the Light theme, which uses a clear color palette with tones of white, gray, and blue. A very popular theme around here is the Dark theme, which (as you would expect) is heavy on gray and black and easy on the eyes. Below is a screenshot of the Light theme: RDMUI3png
  • Quick Access Toolbar: The Quick Access Toolbar contains the System menu icon, Favorite commands, Quick Connect control, and the Lock command.
  • Navigation Pane: The Navigation Pane is one of the main components of RDM’s user interface. It lists all the available entries in the current data source, allowing you to switch to another data source or Vault.
  • Content Area: The Content Area contains the various dashboards to manage RDM, as well as embedded sessions. There is a single dashboard active at a time, depending on the currently selected node in the Navigation Pane.
  • Status Bar: The Status Bar contains the Search/Filter box, RDM version label, the Online/Offline toggle, and the grab input toggle.

But Wait, There’s More!

In addition to changing the style and theme, you can also adjust many other aspects of the user interface, including (but not limited to):

  • Language (English, French, Chinese, Dutch, German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Swedish, or Ukrainian)
  • Data source location
  • Vault location

Your Thoughts

What is your opinion of RDM’s interface? Are you a fan of the Light theme, or have you gone over to the Dark side? Please comment below. We’re always listening to you!
