As American philosopher John Dewey once said: “Skepticism: the mark and even the pose of the educated mind”.

Well, we think Mr. Dewey would be pleased with all of the skeptics these days who refuse to believe what The Powers That Be claim as the truth. No, we aren’t talking about political conspiracies or Area 51. We’re talking about FAN THEORIES!

While there are dozens — or maybe hundreds — of fan theories floating around out there (and more are developing all the time), here are five of the most intriguing:

Fan Theory #1: Jar Jar Binks is a Sith collaborator

The Story: Jar Jar Binks is not, as you may have been led to believe, a clumsy, well-meaning Gungan outcast. According to one popular fan theory, he is a trained Force user, a willing Sith collaborator, and he still has a central role to play in the ongoing Star Wars saga. By the way, this is my personal favorite fan theory!

Fan Theory #2: The briefcase in Pulp Fiction contains Marsellus Wallace’s soul

The Story: There probably isn’t any other movie prop that has triggered more speculation than what’s inside the mysterious briefcase in Pulp Fiction. Well, fans have put forward a bunch of theories — and the most bizarre yet somehow fitting is that the briefcase contains the soul of Marsellus Wallace. In case you’ve forgotten him, he’s the tough guy who called his gang to come over and “get medieval” on a couple of enemies (yikes).

Fan Theory #3: Breaking Bad is the sequel to Malcolm in the Middle

The Story: If you’re a fan of the amazing Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad — and how could you not be? — then you’ve hopefully checked out another great, and in many ways underrated, show that he starred in back in the 1990s called Malcolm in the Middle. Well, rumor has it that the character of Walter White was actually an older Malcolm — which would make Breaking Bad the sequel to Malcolm in the Middle. Hmmmm…I wonder what Saul would make of this?

Fan Theory #4: The 4 Mad Max movies are actually the same story

The Story: I’m a huge fan of the 4 Mad Max movies, so you’ll understand why I was amazed to discover the fan theory that there aren’t 4 separate tales: there is 1 basic movie, but told 4 different ways by various post-apocalyptic protagonists who inject themselves into the narrative in order to further their own agendas. I guess this means we all have to watch the 4 movies again to see if this theory holds up. I’ll make the popcorn!

Fan Theory #5: There is no Ferris Bueller.

The Story: Remember Ferris Bueller? The amazing high school student who could outsmart anyone — especially his bumbling school principal? Well, according to a popular fan theory, there was no Ferris Bueller! Instead, Ferris was Cameron’s alter ego. At first, this seems completely crazy. But the more you think about it and look at the clues, the more sense it makes.
