Another Tuesday on the calendar means another new employee spotlight! Today, I’m delighted to introduce you to Laurent Pepin, our newest Software Developer. Lauren has been a friend of mine for a while, plus he’s my hockey instructor who keeps me motivated — just like Mickey Goldmill.  And in case you thought that hockey is just a winter sport, over here in Canada we play it year ‘round, indoors and outdoors.

I recently had a chat with Laurent and asked him to share some information on his background, role and personality. Here’s a look at our conversation:

Can you tell me a bit about your background?

I studied mechanical engineering for three semesters, and then decided to change programs and pursue a career in software engineering. It was the best decision of my life! I completed an internship here at Devolutions, and I am now working here while I finish my software engineering degree at Polytechnique Montreal.

What would you say is your biggest achievement so far?

Working on the protocols here at Devolutions is, without a doubt, my biggest professional achievement so far. Being able to contribute to the collection of tools included in Remote Desktop Manager fills me with pride. Recently, I worked on the Google Drive implementation, which was very exciting as well.

What was it about Devolutions that made you want to work here?

The environment here at Devolutions is unique. On my first day, I immediately felt like I was part of the team. Devolutions is a great place to work, because the culture is a perfect mix between creating outstanding products, and enjoying the process and experience of making that happen.

What would you say are your top three strengths at work?

I would say that my top three strengths are that I’m always open to learning new things, I’m very dedicated, and I’m always trying to improve and become a better software engineer.

What tasks do you carry out in your job, and what are some of the tools that you use?

Currently, my work involves building protocols in C so that they can be used across all of our Remote Desktop Manager clients for Android, iOS, Mac and Windows. I use Xcode and Visual Studio to write and test my protocols.

What are your impressions about working here?

They say you won't work a day of your life if you love what you do. Well, sometimes I’m having such a great time that I forget that I’m working! My tasks are challenging and fun to do, and the work environment is exceptional. I feel very lucky to work here.

What goals would you like to achieve at Devolutions?

Learning as much as I can is my top priority right now, so that I can make an even bigger contribution to helping my team and supporting our users.

On a personal note, what are some of your hobbies and interests?

I enjoy learning about new technologies, and of course I’m a big hockey fan. I try to play once a week, and watch two Montreal Canadiens games if I can!

Please share a few words with our community of IT pros:

I hope the protocols that I'm building will help you in your work.  If you have any suggestions, I'd be more than happy to hear them!
